Embossing and debossing

Pressing a design into the cover so it stands raised (emboss) or sits recessed (deboss).

Embossing raises part of the cover, and debossing presses it in. Either can be done alone (blind) or combined with foil.

It adds texture readers can feel, and like other special finishes it needs a file that marks the area.
