Lamination

A thin protective film on the cover: matte, gloss or soft touch.

Covers are laminated to protect the print and give them their feel. Matte is smooth and quiet, gloss is shiny and makes colors pop, and soft touch has a velvety feel.

Lamination also helps a cover resist scuffs, moisture and fingerprints.
