Smyth sewn (section sewn)

A strong binding where folded sections of pages are stitched together through the fold.

Pages are printed on large sheets that are folded into sections, called signatures. In Smyth sewing, each section is stitched through its fold and the sections are sewn together.

Sewn books are durable and open more easily, which is why they are common in quality hardcovers and books made to last.
