Head and tail bands
Small decorative bands at the top and bottom of a hardcover's spine.
Head and tail bands are narrow strips of cloth fixed at the top (head) and bottom (tail) of the book block, where it meets the spine.
They are mostly decorative today, adding a finished, classic look to a hardcover.
